Restless autumn in Lapinkaari building

This autumn has been remarkably restless in Lapinkaari, a TOAS building which is reserved for exchange students only. During the past weekends, the police have had to visit the building on various occasions because of over the top partying.

“The behaviour has been extremely bad. The most unfortunate incident took place a few weeks ago when a 40-centimetre thick layer of light expanded clay aggregates (LECA) was spread in the lift and, as a result, the lift was damaged. It also caused a safety hazard because people got trapped in the lift", TOAS Customer Service Manager Pia Ylimäki says.

Those guilty for the lift episode were found and they have agreed to pay for the damage. But this was not the only incident during that weekend:

“Someone had stolen caution tape from a construction site and taped the whole building with it. The tenants could not get out. We have filed a police report and the case is being investigated", Ylimäki states.

Ylimäki is sorry for those students who have come to Tampere to actually study and not just party. Because of the disturbances, some of the buildings reserved for exchange students have to be supervised by security guards.

“I would like to appeal to the students and point out that any cleaning and repair costs will increase the rents", Ylimäki emphasises.

I agree this lift thing wasn't funny, but come on? Who didn't laugh about the construction tape? It made the house look festive and surely no-one felt like they were locked in..

inge, and who should pay the bill? You, maybe?

This article is stupid and the writer is really biased. He did not tell that TOAS decided to do a collective punishment (which is completely unfair and ridiculous, we are not primary school) in stopping the elevator until the end of THE YEAR. Knowing that the people who did it, paid for it (and you have to see the arbitrary price that they were obliged to pay) . So now who is excessive ?
And honestly who believes that in the price of the rent there is not a part (often big) specially reserved for this kind of case, in order that the owner (TOAS) does not loose money. It is the same everywhere. And the caution ?
And concerning the students they are almost 200 hundred paying rents for services that they do not have (having an elevator which actually works, especially for those who are in the third, fourth or fifth floor !), but that does not shock anyone ? Maybe the journalist forgot to really search information deeper...(others than the ones of the police and TOAS).

Sounds like a rumour. If that is true, I hope we will here about it more in the next Aviisi, maybe. Toas is not allowed to make that kind of punishments, thats for sure.

I know that from TOAS itself. They decided to stop the elevator until the end of the year "to be sure that it will not happen again".

toas always has the stupidest solutions to "control" vandalism... my time with toas ended 3 years ago but i remember it well: in lukonmäki they locked the common room for 2 years because of some vandalism. TWO YEARS! and we all paid rent that included common room facilities.
i bet that toas' "clever" ways of damage control is what motivates rebellion.

Behaving like grown-ups sure seems to be tough?

  8. To-ass (22.11.10, kello 21:34)

The article is probaly directly from Toas itself, but phrased by the reporter.

The inhabitants of course have the responsability for any damage and disturbance caused, but collective punishments are even illegal! The guilty party was found and charged, why punish the ones that have nothing to do with it?

As a Finn I can tell you that is not the way they would do things in 100% Finn inhabited appartments. The guilty party would pay and life could go on. We have taped the stairway once in my appartment too. We just picked up the tape the next day after the party (like adults).

I want to know more about the LECA aggregates.... were they nicked from a construction site nearby? Did the lift remain where it was due to the excess weight? Are they alike foundation blocks for buildings? Other than that, good work.

  10. To-ass (29.11.10, kello 14:08)

Toryville: Why is any of that important?

The real question is why does TOAS punish everyone for a few idiots that already were punished?

    F**k the TOAS!
